Goods and services, put ‘em all to good use.
It’s the measure of a nation, year by year,
How much we’re making, it’s the number we cheer.
Consumption, investment, exports too,
Government spending — all in the brew.
Add it together, subtract imports,
That’s how the economists write their reports.
It tells us if the market’s going up or down,
If business is booming in your hometown.
From factories running to food on the plate,
G.D.P. helps us track growth rates.
So when you hear “the economy’s strong,”
Check the numbers, see if they play along.
It ain’t perfect, but it sets the stage,
A snapshot of wealth for every age.
